FROM RUNNING BACK TO FULLBACK: A NEW POSITION FOR A.J DILLON
The Packers haven’t legitimate fullback in the backfield during Matt LeFleur’s time as Packers head coach.
Since 2019, the position has been played most of the time by a tight end or H-Back.
Yes, the Packers have experimented using fullbacks like Danny Vitale and Henry Pearson.
But never have the Packers had a FB, has not only the strength and speed of a Running Back, but can also be a threat out of the backfield.
Enter A.J Dillon.
But why?
You might be asking yourself, why do we want one of our best Running Backs as a Fullback?
The answer is simple, you can have a double threat or in certain situations a triple threat in the backfield.
Dillon definitely has strength and size to be a FB with his weight around 250 pounds.
But what makes this more intriguing is that most of the time it would be Dillon and Jacobs in the backfield.
That would mean having your two best backs in the backfield.
With both Dillon and Jacobs int he backfield you have two backs that can not only run the ball , but can be a treat out in the passing game as well.
The Lloyd effect
In the 2024 draft the Packers drafted USC Running Back MarShawn Lloyd.
Lloyd has the talent and potential to become a game changing running back.
Not only is he a threat on the ground but he is also a threat in the passing game as well.
While Jacobs and Dillon are the type of running back to run you over, Lloyd is different.
Lloyd is the shifty, speedy running back well suited to make defenders miss tackles in the open field.
He has the ability to be a change of pace back that the Packers are looking for.
Lloyd complement the running styles of both Dillon and Jacobs.
This creates an option for LaFleur to have a triple threat in the backfield.
Once again putting you best 11 players out on the field.
Conclusion
The Packers backfield is very talented.
Putting the best 11 players on the field might be harder than it looks.
But with the talent that is in the backfield it will be easy to have two or even three of your best backs in the backfield.
And all it takes is a position change.
